What is orange jasmine?

Jasmine Orange is a type of tropical shrub known for its fragrant flowers. The plant, which is officially known as Murraya paniculata, is native to southern China and India but is generally very sturdy and has been grown all over the world with great success. Despite its common name, the plant is neither orange nor a real jasmine. The designation "orange" refers to the fruity smell of flowers. Although the plant resembles much standard jasmines, it is actually more closely related to the family of citrus than the olive family to which most types of jasmine belong.

The shrub is essentially a South Asian version of the standard jasmine Arab plant. Its flowers are of similar shape, usually carrying five white petals by flowering, but according to most botanists, Orange jasmine is not really a jasmine at all. Most orange jasmine plants are grown for decorative use. Their extracts are known to have mild pain relieving properties, and have once been a facet of traditional Chinese medicine; They are still sometimes used for this purpose, but other plants are generally more powerful. The perfume is also sometimes distilled into fragrances. Distillation is expensive, however. More often, delicate orange fragrance is chemically mimicked for a fraction of the cost.

The shrub usually does better in warm climates or indoors, but adapts to almost any conditions and types of soil. In tropical environments, the plant blooms throughout the year. Outdoors in places with a defined winter, flowers usually appear only seasonally, usually in the spring and summer. Plants at all local produce usually produce fruits every year.

Orange jasmine fruits emerge from flowers as tiny red bulbs each summer. Each bulb contains one to two seeds, depending on the size. The fruits belong to the family of citrus fruits, but are usually too bitter to be acceptable to humans. They are usually consumed by birds which then pass the seeds as waste. This is the main means by which the plant reproduces.

Gardeners outside tropical climates often grow orange jasmine inside like a potted plant. The shrub can thrive for years in containment and will generally adapt to a container of any size. Cutting planted jasmine inside is often necessary to keep the plant a manageable size but repotting is usually not necessary ever.

Planting jasmine in a very small pot can lead to fragrant dwarf trees, also known as bonsai. Bonsai is an ancient Japanese art form in which plants and shrubs are grown in miniature. Jasmin Orange is a favorite of bonsai in part because even miniature versions carry full-screen flowers.
